چکیده

Introductory calculus-based mechanics (“Physics 1”) is an important gateway course for students desiring to pursue a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career. A major challenge with this the large spread in students’ incoming physics preparation. This level of preparation strongly predictive performance because overlap between Physics 1 high school courses. Because largely determined by quality their courses, can amplify K–12 educational inequities be barrier marginalized wishing STEM Here, we present novel introductory design address equity challenge. The implementation are based on concept deliberate practice as applied learning real-world problem solving. Students explicitly research-identified decision-based skills required solving context problems. problems used solutions have little resemblance what encounter physics, thereby reducing dependence Versions were taught at highly selective private lightly public university. who took learned content knowledge they needed future particularly problem-solving improved substantially. Furthermore, had much less correlation than was case outcomes from traditional courses both institutions: one dropped r=0.62 0.14, other r=0.56 0.26. These findings suggest more equitable version course, hence beneficial students.Received 8 August 2022Accepted 23 September 2022DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevPhysEducRes.18.020124Published American Physical Society under terms Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Understanding Student Answers In Introductory Physics Courses

Many assigned problems in introductory physics courses require the student to formulate a system of algebraic equations that describe a physical situation. An Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) designed to help must be able to identify which physical quantity each student variable represents, and which fundamental laws each of her equations incorporates. Many ITS’s predefine the variables ([4,2]...

Computational physics in the introductory calculus-based course

The integration of computation into the introductory calculus-based physics course can potentially provide significant support for the development of conceptual understanding. Computation can support three-dimensional visualizations of abstract quantities, offer opportunities to construct symbolic rather than numeric solutions to problems, and provide experience with the use of vectors as coord...

e-learning Utilization Based on the Problem-Solving Approach

Introduction & Objective: Paying attention to the process and approaches to the problem solving from the view of the e-learning courses designers, will improve the aspects of development. The problem-based learning provides the discovery structure and helps the students to internalize their learning. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that lead to more utili...

Effectiveness of problem-based learning in introductory business courses

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional approach that provides learners with opportunities to identify solutions to ill-structured, real-world problems. Previous research provides evidence to support claims about the positive effects of PBL on cognitive skill development and knowledge retention. This study contributes to existing literature by exploring the influence of PBL on affectiv...

Developing Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Skills in Physics and Engineering Physics Courses

Physics instruction at the university level is conducted through lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and problem solving recitation sessions. Students are tested and evaluated for their mastery of physical concepts through carefully designed problems in almost all physics courses. Unfortunately, several studies 1-3 show that traditional methods of problem solving may not be the best approach...
